Vintage Leaves of a Different Color

Vintage Leaves stamp set from Stampin Up. Card by Natalie Lapakko.

Leaves of a Different Color

I thought that Autumn cards were all about warm, rich color schemes and lots of neutrals and such. Every once in awhile someone throws a purple into the mix and it looks just great. These seemingly unbreakable color traditions are almost as deeply imbedded as black + orange = Halloween and red + green = Christmas. A couple of weeks ago, Kim Van Diepen changed the way I thought about Autumn Cards.

Kim shared a card, with layers upon gorgeous layers of sparkles, splatters, and washi tape (all my favorite things). This isn’t unusual for Kim, as all of her cards are amazing; she’s the queen of awesome embellishments and lovely layers. What really caught my eye and sparked my imagination on this particular card was her focal point: a blue leaf. Blue?! Yes blue!

Here is Kim’s amazing card:

I’ve been wanting to CASE (copy and selectively edit) her card ever since seeing this, and now I finally have the chance to share it! I took inspiration from this awesome, yet unconventional, Autumn color scheme and of course I had to include a blue leaf of my very own!

Challenge Inspiration

I was also inspired by Freshly Made Sketches Challenge #258!

I substituted leaves and baker’s twine for the banner shapes, then had to add an extra leaf down in the bottom corner to help balance everything out. Large dark blue shapes are kind of heavy, visually. This card seemed almost lopsided at first. Luckily, a small shape out of the fringes can balance out a larger shape that is a little closer to center. It’s asymmetrical, but it is balanced!

Directions

  1. Cut a card base in Whisper White.
  2. Stamp Vintage Leaves onto Pacific Point and Pool Party cardstock with black ink. Cut out with Leaflet Framelit dies.
  3. Cut a panel of Daffodil Delight Brights Designer Series Paper at 3-1/4″ by 3″ (8.3 cm x 7.7 cm).
  4. Cut a panel of Basic Black at 3-1/2″ by 3-1/4″ (8.9 cm x 8.3 cm).
  5. Adhere the panels together.
  6. Tie Basic Black baker’s twine around the card. Knot in the front.
  7. Attach leaves using dimensionals.

A Surprising Autumn Color Combination

This bright color combination was borrowed from Kim’s awesome card. She was unafraid to think outside the box and try bold new colors for Autumn leaves.
