Vellum Cover Christmas Cards

Christmas cards with vellum and Candy Cane Lane and Presents and Pinecones DSPs from Stampin' Up! Design by Natalie Lapakko.

Vellum Cover Christmas Cards

This card has an outer layer of vellum that is the same size as a standard card and a solid inner card that is smaller, giving small card beautiful diaphanous quality. Any designer series paper that you use on the inner card is softened by the layer of vellum on top of it, which allows the element that is on top of the vellum to really stand out.

This type of card is a really great way to showcase bold designer series papers and beautiful intricate dies. As a bonus, this type of card is much easier to make than it looks, with very few materials and very few steps. It is a great card for demonstrations or if you need to make some for all of your loved ones.

Technique Tutorial

Vellum cover card with miniature inner card tutorial and measurements, with Stampin' Up Designer Series Papers.

Candy Cane Lane Card Directions

  1. Cut and crease a vellum card base.
  2. Create a small inner card base: Cut a piece of Real Red cardstock 1″ (2.5 cm) shorter and 2″ (5 cm) less wide than the vellum card base. Crease in the center.
  3. Cut a piece of striped Candy Cane Lane Designer Series Paper 1/4″ (0.6 cm) smaller than the small inner card base. Adhere this to the front of the small inner card base.
  4. Adhere the small inner card inside the vellum card base. Keep in mind that whichever adhesive you use will show through on the back of the card. If you don’t like to see the adhesive, you can cut a piece of cardstock the same size as the inner card and adhere it on the back of the vellum.
  5. Cut out a gingerbread house from a piece of Candy Candy Lane Designer Series Paper. Adhere to the front of the card with two to three glue dots.

Presents and Pinecones Card Directions

  1. Cut and crease a vellum card base.
  2. Create a small inner card base: Cut a piece of Mint Macaron cardstock 1″ (2.5 cm) shorter and 2″ (5 cm) less wide than the vellum card base. Crease in the center.
  3. Cut a piece of striped Candy Cane Lane Designer Series Paper 1/4″ (0.6 cm) smaller than the front of the small inner card base. Adhere this to the inner card base.
  4. Adhere the small inner card inside the vellum card base. Keep in mind that whichever adhesive you use will show through on the back of the card. If you don’t like to see the adhesive, you can cut a piece of cardstock the same size as the inner card and adhere it on the back of the vellum.
  5. Die cut a Whisper White Pinecone and a medium sized Emerald Envy pine branch using the Pretty Pines Thinlit Dies. I trimmed some of the pine needles off so the branch would have a long stem to mimic the DSP pattern.
  6. Adhere the pinecone and the pine branch to the front of the card with glue dots.

Two Christmas Color Combinations

Straight from Candy Cane Lane Designer Series Paper, this first color scheme is high contrast gingerbread. Black, white, and red are very bold colors with lots of contrast that make even the neutral Crumb Cake stand out.

Color Combination: Basic Black, Real Red, Crumb Cake

This color combination is from the Presents and Pinecones Designer Series Paper. This paper has a lot of really pretty and versatile patterns, so I have used it a lot. The Candy Cane Lane paper might be a little jealous, and I will have to give it a little more love in the future.

Color combination: Emerald Envy, Mint Macaron, Cherry Cobbler
