Simply Smashing Cupcakes and Carousels

Simply Smashing Cupcakes and Carousels

My card today uses the “Smashing Technique” which is a fun way to add some texture to a card. I’ll admit, I didn’t understand why this technique had such an interesting name…. until I was teaching it to a whole table full of stampers!

The Smashing Technique

To create a card background using the Smashing Technique, you ink up a stamp and stamp it onto the background panel, then keep stamping it all round the paper until the ink is gone. You repeat this until your background is as full as desired. It works great for floral backgrounds, especially. In this card, we focused on filling a diagonal line rather than the entire background and used carousel horses instead of flowers.

When you get several people enthusiastically stamping off all the ink from their stamp (and not having to worry about lining up the stamp perfectly) it can get get a little loud! The Smashing Technique definitely earned it’s name!

Challenge Inspiration

This card is entered in the Global Design Project Challenge #079!

A circus theme is great for all kinds of celebratory occasions including birthdays, cards for kids, thank yous, and even weddings. Cupcakes and Carousels Designer Series Paper and the Carousel Birthday stamp are obvious choices to go with this theme. The carousel horse is my favorite stamp in the set, but the ferris wheel and the circus tent are also great.

After a busy weekend, I was glad that I already had a card created that happened to match this theme. After teaching this card to my class, I’ve been wanting to share is on the blog for awhile and now have the perfect chance!

Offering Options at a Card Class

I used to be an art teacher and I much preferred teaching my students to be creative over following the exact directions. Now that I’m starting to teach card making classes, I want to continue to let students make creative decisions. That can be a challenge when you have to have a certain number of materials prepared and have papers cut to a specific size.

With this card, it is very easy to offer customization options in a class! I had a Calypso Coral and a Bermuda Bay card base, several options for designer series paper strips that coordinated with the card base colors, and two colors of glimmer paper strips. I also let students choose whether they wanted rhinestones or pearls for embellishments.

Card Directions

  1. First, cut and fold a card base. Choose from Bermuda Bay or Calypso Coral cardstock.
  2. Next, cut a Very Vanilla panel 1/4″ (0.6 cm) more narrow than the card base.
  3. On the Very Vanilla panel, ink up the carousel horse stamp from the Carousel Birthday stamp set in So Saffron ink. Stamp in a diagonal line until all the ink is gone from the stamp, then repeat several times. This is the Smashing Technique!
  4. Cut a 3/4″ (1.9 cm) strip of Cupcakes and Carousels Designer Series Paper that coordinates with the card base.
  5. Line up the strip of designer series paper on the Very Vanilla panel for placement. Then, stamp the sentiment from All Things Thanks in Early Espresso ink.
  6. Cut a 3/8″ (0.9 cm) strip of Bermuda Bay or Blushing Bride Glimmer Paper.
  7. Adhere the layers together.
  8. Add rhinestones or pearl embellishments around the sentiment. I usually like to arrange my embellishments in a triangle.

Color Combination

Both of my color combinations coordinate with the Cupcakes and Carousels Designer Series Paper, so everyone in a card class can start with the same front panel (with So Saffron and Early Espresso) then customize their card with a strip of Designer Series Paper and a matching card base!
