A Parade of Sale-a-bration Cards

A Parade of Sale-a-bration Cards

Sale-a-bration is almost over! Until March 31st, at Stampin’ Up! you can earn a free product for every $50 (US) that you spend. These products are only available while supplies last, though, and some are already gone.

My post today is a parade of cards featuring some of my favorite Sale-a-bration products. I’ve got five cards to share with you today, so make sure you scroll all the way down to the bottom to avoid missing anything!

Going, going, gone! Unfortunately, glimmer paper, card tins, and both kinds of embossing folder have already sold out, but there are still quite a few items to choose from!

No Bones About It: Card Tips

  • Stamp the background using shapes from the Playful Pals stamp set and Pool Party, Bermuda Bay, and Dapper Denim inks. I’ve been having lots of fun making backgrounds with this stamp set.
  • When you die cut a sentiment, it is usually easier to get the sentiment right in the middle if you stamp it first, then cut it out.
  • The stamps on the dinosaurs back start with a stamp that comes with the No Bones About It stamp set, but I used a Dapper Denim Stampin’ Write Marker to add a few extra spots.
  • Sadly, there are no framelit dies to cut out these dinosaurs. I would buy them in a heartbeat if there were! I had to fussy cut out this little guy.
  • Don’t overlook the awesomeness of the basic color family Designer Series Papers! These basic patterns are really useful: stripes, polka dots, flowers, and cursive words. The best part? This paper literally comes in every color!

Homemade card with Tasty Truck and Cool Treats stamps from Stampin' Up! Design by Natalie Lapakko.

A Truck of Tasty Treats: Card Tips

  • I have been practicing a new technique to get an ombre effect (also known as a gradient effect) on a stamp, and I have really been liking it! You ink up the stamp as normal with the lighter color ink, then you sponge the second color on the bottom half of the stamp. You can see this in action on the sentiment, which is in Crumb Cake with Watermelon Wonder on the bottom.
  • The background for this card was really fun to make. I put the stripe stamp and the stick stamp on one stamp block and used Peekaboo Peach and Watermelon Wonder to give each popsicle an ombre effect. I stamped that in a pattern over the whole background. Then, I stamped the full popsicle shape with VersaMark ink on top of the stripes and embossed the popsicles with clear ink. These popsicles are so shiny!  I didn’t stamp everything perfectly, but I liked the effect so much I just had to share it with you all.
  • This truck looked a little too plain, so I added some subtle texture and shading using cross hatching. It sounds fancy, but it is really just some criss crossed diagonal lines that don’t even have to be straight. I drew these with a Watermelon Wonder Stampin’ Write Marker.
  • Tasty Treats Specialty Designer Series Paper is from the Occasions Catalog, but until the end of March, you can also earn it for free as part of Sale-a-bration!

Handmade cards by Natalie Lapakko featuring Tasty Trucks stamps and Urban Underground DSP from Stampin' Up!

Urban Underground Pancakes: Card Tips

  • Tiny stamps make great backgrounds. I stamped these pancakes from the Tasty Trucks stamp set in Dapper Denim ink on Dapper Denim cardstock. It still shows up fairly dark. For an even more subtle coloring, you can use VersaMark ink without any embossing powder.
  • The Lots of Labels shapes weren’t quite long enough for my sentiment, so I cut a strip the same width as the die, then I cut the ends one at a time. I made a second shape that was even longer, to create layers.
  • Lace doilies are one of my favorite things from the Occasions catalog. They are actually cut from cardstock, so they are fairly thick and very durable. They are white on one side and Very Vanilla on the other. If those two options don’t go with your color scheme, you can even sponge ink onto them (because they are so durable) and make them any color you want!
  • Party Animal Designer Series Paper (the Crushed Curry paper with the numbers in this card) is also a Sale-a-bration item until the end of March! You can earn it for free!

Homemade card by Natalie Lapakko featuring Tasty Truck and Playful Pals stamps from Stampin' Up!

Playful Pals + Tasty Trucks: Card Tips

  • The background was stamped with shapes from Playful Pals. On the largest shape, I inked the stamp first in Peekaboo Peach, then sponged Watermelon Wonder on part of the stamp for an ombre stamping effect.
  • I echoed the ombre stamping by embossing a white Tasty Truck on Peekaboo Peach cardstock, then sponging on some Watermelon Wonder ink. I add my ink with circular rubbing motions, and I always start off the edge of my art on a piece of scratch paper to avoid blotches.
  • Smooth blending with sponges takes a bit of practice. Start with just a little ink by rubbing most of it off on scratch paper first. If you apply the color lightly, and it is too light, you can always add more… but you can’t make it lighter again!
  • Ribbons that aren’t tied down can be a little tricky. They don’t always want to stay just where you stick them. Since this ribbon is hidden behind another element, I just used staples to make sure the attachment was really sturdy. You could also staples as an embellishment, especially if you get specialty colors, like gold.

Homemade card by Natalie Lapakko featuring Carried Away DSP and Lift Me Up stamps from Stampin' Up!

Carried Away: Card Tips

  • My background is watercolor paper that I have embossed with white shapes from the Balloon Celebrations stamp set. After embossing, I colored with a Mint Macaron Stampin’ Write Marker, zig zagging back and forth across the left side of the paper. Finally, I use a paintbrush with water to create a wash. The ink from the markers spreads out nicely!
  • Washi tape apparently doesn’t like to stick really well to watercolor paper. The edges of my tape kept peeling up! I solved this by burnishing the tape; that means I pressed it down and rubbed it really hard. A bone folder is the perfect tool for this job!
  • Designer Series Paper, sometimes known as “DSP”, is Stampin’ Up’s patterned paper. It is fairly sturdy for patterned paper, great for envelopes and such. However, when I want to pop it up on dimensionals, I like to add a layer of cardstock behind it for even more strength, so when I put a card in an envelope it doesn’t get flattened.
  • An oldie, but goodie: I love the Decorative Label Punch. This is the first punch I ever owned, given to me when I first started out stamping and had almost no supplies by my wonderful aunt and stamping buddy, Sue. I use it ALL the time; it’s in two of my cards today! Can you find the other one?
