Dinosaurs Up to the Challenge

These dinosaur cards were inspired by this Mojo Monday challenge #444. I really like this particular challenge. It has resulted in SO many awesome cards! Go take a look for yourself!

The official art term of the day that relates to this challenge is triptych. A Triptych is a work of art divided into three parts. This was a very common way to create artwork for Christian religious displays above altars in the Renaissance period. These paintings even folded closed, like a giant card!

Enough history… let’s move on to ancient history!

I decided that I wanted to feature dinosaurs in this challenge. Have I mentioned that No Bones About It from Stampin’ Up is one of my favorite stamp sets? I’m excited that it is not retiring when the new catalog comes out! I already have it, of course, but not retiring means people will continue to use it and post more ideas using the set. Wahoo!

This card (above) is my official entry for the challenge, but I couldn’t help make another and still another!

All three cards use a technique of stamping on a solid colored paper to create my own patterned paper. Wanda Cullen also used this idea for this challenge, and I loved it!

The best advice I ever got about stamping my own paper was from my Stampin’ Up demonstrator, Jan. She says that if you want a background to look “random” you shouldn’t stamp it randomly at all! Start with a triangle, then wherever you have two points of a triangle, add a third point. Keep building up until you have the whole paper covered in triangles. This works so well! Thanks for the awesome advice Jan!

I realized after the first card that I had chosen an herbivore dinosaur to go with the leafy background, so I chose a carnivorous dinosaur to go with the bony background, thus completing the food chain.

The third and final card was also supposed to be a triptych, but it didn’t behave itself in the slightest. Three white panels were too bright with the background, so it got cut down to one. The circles started their own little party and invited a wacky spiral shape to join in the fun (more about that in my next post). In the end, this is my favorite of the three cards.
