All You Need is Bloomin’ Love

Valentines by Natalie Lapakko with Bloomin' Love Thinlit Dies from Stampin' Up!

All You Need is Bloomin’ Love

The Bloomin’ Heart Thinlit die is so large and so intricate that it fills an entire card front all by itself! This can make it really easy to design cards quickly and easily for Valentine’s Day.

With a small change of color or an added embellishment here or there it is easy to personalize these Valentine’s for all the loved ones on you list. Here are two very different cards you can make with Bloomin’ Hearts cut from the exact same piece of watercolor painted paper.

Artist Inspired

I was inspired today by Dena Rekow! She’s an Independent Stampin’ Up! demonstrator with a ton of talent, an excellent eye for color combinations, and awesome teaching skills. She’s got an amazing blog where she not only shows off gorgeous, inspirational cards… she also makes videos teaching you how to make them, too! I love how excited Dena is in every single video; you can tell she just loves card making!

I have learned SO much from her… go check out her blog, The Creativity Cave, and see how you will be inspired!

Are you back? Cool. Bookmark that site, it’s a good one.

One of Dena’s cards, in particular, that I love is this one:

Butterfly card by Dena Rekow.

You can see how she made it in her Big Shot Madness post, which also contains, believe it or not, a bunch of super useful tips on how to use the Big Shot.

You can probably see where I got some of my ideas for the black card! I used similar colors on a black background and I borrowed Dena’s metallic wire wrapping around the card.

Isn’t she just so cool?

Anyway, onward to the card directions!

Crumb Cake Card Directions

  1. First, cut a Crumb Cake card base.
  2. Next, cut a Calypso Coral panel 1/4″ (0.6 cm) smaller than the card base.
  3. Cut a Whisper White panel 3/8″ (0.9 cm) smaller than the card case.
  4. Then, cut a Crumb cake panel 5/8″ (1.5 cm) smaller than the card base.
  5. Adhere all the top three layers together, then use dimensionals to attach them to the card base.
  6. On a piece of watercolor paper, do a watercolor wash with Real Red, Flirty Flamingo, and Pumpkin Pie. For a speckled look, put ink on a piece of clear plastic, sprinkle it with water, them smoosh it facedown onto your watercolor paper.
  7. To speed up the drying process, you can use your embossing heat tool.
  8. When the paper is dry, die cut a heart shape with the Bloomin’ Heart Thinlit Die.
  9. Use the remaining watercolored scraps to die cut several coordinating flowers. Curve the flowers by placing them flat in your palm, then rubbing them in the center with the knuckle from your other hand.
  10. Adhere the flowers to the heart, then adhere the heart to the card base.
  11. Optionally, pop the card up on dimensionals for a little added depth. If you do this, you will need to cut the dimensionals pretty small and use quite a few to support the heart. I definitely think it is worth the effort!

Musical Card Directions

  1. Create a Basic Black card base.
  2. Cut a Basic Black panel 1/4″ (o.6 cm) smaller than the card base.
  3. Emboss the black panel with a textured embossing folder. I used a music note pattern from Darice, that went with my musical theme for this card.
  4. On a piece of watercolor paper, do a watercolor wash with Real Red, Flirty Flamingo, and Pumpkin Pie. For a speckled look, put ink on a piece of clear plastic, sprinkle it with water, them smoosh it facedown onto your watercolor paper.
  5. To speed up the drying process, you can use your embossing heat tool.
  6. When the paper is dry, die cut a heart shape with the Bloomin’ Heart Thinlit Die.
  7. Use the remaining watercolored scraps to die cut several coordinating flowers. Curve the flowers by placing them flat in your palm, then rubbing them in the center with the knuckle from your other hand.
  8. Cut a strip of sheet music paper from This Christmas Designer Series Paper. Tear one end and adhere the other end to the heart shape.
  9. Adhere the flowers to the heart, adding a few extra to cover the edge of the sheet music.
  10. Then adhere the heart to the card base.
  11. Wrap metallic thread around the bottom of the embossed panel, right below the bottom of the heart. These are like guitar strings for this musical card!
  12. Adhere a couple of extra flowers on top of the threads.
  13. Finally, adhere the front panel to the card base.

Color Combination

There is only one color difference between these two cards, but the difference is quite large! This first color combination uses Crumb Cake as it’s background, which softens the color scheme quite a bit. On this card, the red stands out the most, making for a bright and cheerful combination.

This second color scheme uses black as a background. There is much more contrast with this dark background, and all the colors stand out very vividly. This is a more edgy, bold color combination.
