B is for Birthday, Z is for Zebra

I am in a birthday kind of mood. There are several birthdays coming up in my family and friend group in the next month, so I’ve had lots and lots of birthday ideas floating around in my head. Since I have been so birthday focused, it seemed like a good time to play along with a Seize the Birthday Challenge. Their theme this week is “Anything Goes”.

My mom got me into stamping by convincing me to join her card club. We often share stamp sets and trade back and forth, effectively doubling the number of stamp sets we have access to. I recently borrowed the Zoo Babies stamp set (c) Stampin’ Up! from her. They are so cute! They are perfect for birthdays, baby showers, and many other occasions. I’ve been using them in all kinds of cards! I decided wanted to do a card that featured a zebra from that set.

Next, card I dug through my Basket of Lost Dreams. What’s that, you ask? It’s a basket (or bucket or box) of papers that were stamped or cut for other projects and never got used. I often stamp multiples trying to choose the best color, or get carried away with builder punches and punch out a whole sheet of balloons when I only really need one. I used to call this my scrap pile, until I learned that Brian King (one of my favorite card artists) also has a bucket of scraps like this, but he calls it his the Bucket of Lost Dreams. What a great idea! I’ll have to send him a nickle…

Anyway, I found several “lost dreams” in black, white, and vellum. These seemed perfect for a zebra’s birthday party! There was even a birthday hat, stamped and ready to go.

I needed a little splash of color to coordinate with the zebra’s birthday hat, so I added a skinny stripe of Watermelon Wonder around the edge. What size makes a “skinny” stripe? I’m so glad you asked.

Recipe for a Perfect Skinny Border:

  1. Card Size (black): 5 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches
  2. Outer Panel (pink): 5 1/4 x 4 inches (or the previous size, minus 1/4 inch)
  3. Inner Panel (white): 5 1/8 x 3 7/8 (or the previous size minus 1/8 inch)

There we have it, an Anything Goes, Lost Dreams, Skinny Stripe, Zebra Birthday Bash card!

  1. I adore your Bucket of Lost Dreams, Natalie, and I adore this card. Such a great mix of shapes and patterns – love that the hat fits perfectly on the zebra.

  2. Always nice to have those birthday cards ready and waiting for the event. I got a chuckle on the Bucket of Lost Dreams. Love it! Thanks for joining us at Seize the Birthday.
