The new Stampin’ Up! catalog is available for demonstrators right now and will be ready for customers on September 1st! I can’t share the actual catalog yet, but I can share photos I have taken and projects I have made! Hooray!

Painted Autumn Designer Series Paper

The Painted Autumn Designer Series Paper includes hand painted patterns with a variety of natural and graphic images. It is Fall themed, but many of the patterns could be used year round. I love the variety in this paper collection.

It’s also very colorful. Some papers include end of summer colors with greens and blues, while other papers take their inspiration from later in the season with lots of yellows and oranges. The colors included are: Very Vanilla, Early Espresso, Soft Sky, Garden Green, Lemon Lime Twist, Crushed Curry, Daffodil Delight, Peekaboo Peach, Tangerine Tango, and Cajun Craze.

It is absolutely gorgeous. Take a look!

 Painted Autumn Sunflowers

My first card uses papers from the green and blue end of the spectrum in this paper collection. I paired up this new paper with some embellishments that are in the annual catalog.

Ombre ribbon looks awesome with watercolored papers like these, because both have a variety of light and dark tints of the same hue. This helps add to the unity of the card as a whole.

Glitter Dots, one of the most popular embellishments from Stampin’ Up!’s Annual Catalog, also comes in ombre! There are four main colors of dots, but each has four different tints. The Crushed Curry dots, for example, has dots that match perfectly with Daffodil Delight and So Saffron papers as well.

Sunflower Card Tips

  • Fussy cutting: I fussy cut out each of these sunflowers from the Designer Series Paper. The easiest way I’ve found is to cut a circle around the outer flower petals first, then cut a V between each petal.
  • Sentiment patterns: I stamped my sentiment multiple times to make a pattern. I used Pool Party ink on Pool Party paper, stamped a layer of sentiments at full strength, then did a second, more random layer, that was stamped off first. This made a sort of sort texture behind the sentiment that matched the softness of the rest of the card.
  • Layer order: It helps to plan out all the elements of a card first, and glue it down last. This helps you figure out the best order of operations. For example, on this card, it was important to attach the banner shapes first so I could trim the top edges to match the panel. Then, I tied the ribbon before adhering the textured panel to the card base so the back side of the ribbon would be hidden when the card is open.

Merry Little Christmas Designer Series Paper

Merry Little Christmas Designer Series Paper is technically a Christmas paper – it’s part of the same mega suite that includes the Carols of Christmas bundle that has been released a month early. If you want to get an early start on Christmas, be sure to check it out!

Anyway, it’s a Christmas paper, but most of the papers are useful for so much more than Christmas. The bold black and white patterns can be paired up with any splash of color you want for any time of the year. Plus you could sponge ink on these pages or color them with Stampin’ Write Markers to change the white to any color you wanted.  The Old Olive papers would go well with florals, fall leaves, or even pumpkins… which you will see I have demonstrated below!

Pumpkin Season Card

In addition to showing off the beautiful Merry Little Christmas Designer Series Paper, I’ve also included sneak peeks of some new stamp sets in this card! The sentiment is from a set called Snowflake Sentiments and the pumpkins are from a set called Pick a Pumpkin. Pick a Pumpkin also coordinates with Framelit Dies. See that starry pumpkin cut out peeking out there? I think it is just so cute!

Stampin’ Up! has released a couple of product preview videos, including one for Snowflake Sentiments. Isn’t it amazing? This set has such great scrolling sentiments, including this one that I think is appropriate for pumpkin season, too!

Pumpkin Season Card Tips

  • Depth: Building up depth adds interest to a card. You can add depth by stamping a layer of pumpkins right onto the background, then use dimensionals to pop up the next layer of pumpkins so it looks like a 3D pumpkin patch!
  • Masking: I used sticky notes to cover up my stamped layer of pumpkins, then stamped the leaves. The sticky notes protect the previously stamped image from getting inky, so it looks like the leaves are overlapped behind the pumpkins.
  • Save Paper: Rather than cut a big piece of Designer Series Paper that would just be covered up by the white panel, I used two 1″ (2.5 cm) strips attached to the top and the bottom.

Spooky Night Designer Series Paper

Next up we have a super fun and vibrant Halloween paper! This one is 100% jam packed with fun. There’s some great patterns such as polka dots and stripes, and then there’s potions, cats, pumpkins, and witches hats. Witches hats! I bet it is no surprise that I am happy to have a Designer Series Paper covered in witches hats!

The paper colors are Cajun Craze, Pumpkin Pie, Basic Black, and Very Vanilla. The paper that has all the words on it has some words in Very Vanilla and some in Whisper White, so that page coordinates with both.

Oh! And there is a Cat Punch coming that coordinates both with this paper and a new stamp set.

Bewitching Adventure Card

I had to make a card with the witch hat paper first. Obviously.

I wanted to show off the totally awesome hat pattern, so I kept the layout simple. Lots of layers and embellishments can sometimes compete with a busy patterned paper like this one. The only embellishment is a little black sequins trim on the fussy cut hat (which is actually showing off the pattern from the back side of the hat paper).

Bewitching Adventure Card Tips

  • Fun shaped paper strip: I needed my paper strip to go behind both the sentiment and the hat shape, but if I made the entire thing that wide, it would have covered up way too much of that fun background paper! Instead I made just part of the strip wider by adding a shape cut using the Pretty Label Punch. With black paper, you can’t really tell that it is actually two pieces.
  • Tiny word stamping: I had a bit of trouble stamping the word “begin” on this card. I pushed the stamp down too hard on the VersaMark ink pad, and pushed too hard again when I stamped it, especially on the B side of the word. With tiny words like this one, extra ink can build up around the skinny stamp lines pretty easily. Once I added the embossing powder I realized I had made an extra inky puddle around the B that caused it to look a bit blotchy. To avoid this problem, use a light tapping motion to ink your stamps and use a light and even pressure when stamping (a MISTI helps with even stamping pressure, too).

Quilted Christmas Designer Series Paper

The Quilted Christmas Designer Series Paper is a really fun and very Christmas-y paper. I love this paper for so many reasons.

  1. It adds in some modern colors to the traditional Christmas palette. Aside from Real Red and Carden Green, it has a hint of Pool Party, Blushing Bride, and Lemon Lime Twist. So fun!
  2. There are a bajillion different patterns. Okay, not really, but there are a lot. I only could fit 12 of the patterns in this photo, but there are several more not shown here.
  3. It coordinates with a several different products in the 2017 Holiday catalog. There is a Christmas Quilt stamp set with coordinating dies that you can see in this video. It works really well with another suite, too; this one is called Smitten Mittens. Finally, there is a perfect sentiment in the Snowflake Sentiments stamps set. I used it in my example card below.

Quilted Mittens Card

My mom’s mom died twelve years ago right around Christmas. We still miss her, especially around the holidays. Grandma showed how much she loved us all through her knitting. She spent hours and hours making us blankets and mittens. I still snuggle up under her blanket in the winter to keep warm and my son wears mittens that she made for me when I was his age. One year my mom decorated our banister at Christmas with a garland hung with all the mittens grandma made us over the years.

My first Christmas card of the year is dedicated to my grandma, whose love still wraps us in warmth after all these years.

Quilted Mittens Card Tips

Maximize your stamp budget:

When a new catalog comes out, it can be really hard to narrow down your wish list into a list you can actually afford. Everything comes in an awesome bundle and there are so many coordinating products that work so perfectly together!

One way I make the most out of my stamping budget is to carefully consider if I really need the whole stamp and die bundle. Sometimes I really like the dies, but I can live without the stamps.

With the Smitten Mitten bundle I decided that I loved the stamps, but most of the shapes in the bundle we easy enough to cut out that I could manage without the dies. I will miss the intricate mitten die… but not getting it meant that I had enough money leftover to buy a whole ‘nother stamp set.

So if you don’t have the bundle:

I stamped the mitten and cuff stamps on the back side of this sheet of Quilted Christmas Designer Series Paper, then cut them out. I think fussy cutting actually gives a little crisper shape than dies that are meant to have a little padding around a stamped image. It’s difficult to see in the pictures, but I also added a ribbed texture to the cuffs by scoring lines every 1/8″ (approximately every 0.2 cm).

Gatefold card:

A Gatefold Card Base is the same as a standard card, but instead of scoring it at the halfway point, score it at the one quarter and three quarter points. My card is held closed by tucking the sentiment circle underneath the left mitten, which is raised up on dimensionals to add just enough wiggle room to slide the circle under it. I had to use a little planning to make sure my dimensional placement didn’t block the circle from going underneath the mitten!

Background stamping:

For precise pattern stamping, use a stamp positioning tool such as a Stamp-a-Ma-Jig or a MISTI. It takes awhile to get each image lined up exactly right, but the results are well worth the effort.
